I think the biggest difference between us and other tailoring companies is our people. People who measure clients, cut patterns, sew, press, deliver, alter, wear and enthuse about our beautifully tailored clothes. And the people who answer the phone, designed and update the website, write on Facebook, drive the van… Every single one makes a difference. I’m very proud of the Norton & Townsend team.
The difference between bespoke, made to measure and custom? The dictionary is pretty clear that there is no difference. I interchange the words. But it doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate why Savile Row want to make ‘bespoke’ something different. The problem is when you can buy a bespoke sideboard, bespoke Range Rover, bespoke cushion covers, you just can’t get hung up on the word.
Modern tailoring with a soft shoulder and sleeve head, a more casual silhouette. A big fan of navy.
"What matters to our clients is the quality of our service. We make clothes that fit them perfectly, tailored to their own unique measurements and body figuration, in their choice of style, trim and fabric - and they love it. You can call it what you like but to our clients, it’s Norton & Townsend."
I pride myself on making individual and stylish suits that fit perfectly. I’ll talk you through all the fabrics and design options available, discuss when, where and how often you want to wear the finished piece, and, perhaps most importantly, find out a little more about what makes you tick. Utterly individual – that’s the mark of bespoke tailoring.
Sharp slim three piece suit. Not afraid of checks.
"I haven’t met a man who has had a bespoke suit and happily gone back to wearing off-the-peg. You simply cannot recreate the incredible way it makes you feel. We practically sculpt fabric around your body and carefully tailor it to enhance your silhouette. And we only use beautiful fabric made in short runs by master weavers. What’s not to love about that?"
Norton & Townsend is the perfect fit for me. Honest principles and a great attention to detail. We’re not about the hype; we don’t need to be. We have a full understanding of cut, make and are fully up to speed with the latest cloth technology. We grow through great relationships with both clients and suppliers together with a passion that keeps us moving forward.
A contemporary cut to a classic look.
"I’ve been in the trade for over 35 years and loved every minute of it. I think I was meant to be a tailor, feels like thread runs in my veins. There’s no better reward than seeing a beautifully fitted suit"
I really enjoy putting my client in the driving seat. He is the designer. Together we can explore all the available options from fabric and lining to the colour of the buttons and sewing thread. He can be as sober or adventurous as he likes. His new suit should be the ‘one off’ that he always loves to wear.
Classic British style with an Italian contemporary twist.
"The best part for me is the sense of pride and achievement we share in the creation of a unique luxury suit."
They say you cannot beat experience. I started working in my family menswear business at the age of 14 so next year will be 40 years in the suit trade. Over the decades fashions have been exciting, extreme, extravagant and downright bonkers. What has not changed is style. Style has never been fashion. It is a way of life.
Health warning, the garments I make for you will become your favourite pieces!
"Attention to detail and understanding a customer’s requirements, along with making suggestions, offering advice and above all listening means we make garments that result in happy customers. When a chap compliments your suit, it is a great feeling."
Developing a relationship with clients is paramount. I have to understand the image they need to portray and how many garments they have to rotate their wardrobe to ensure they look good at all times. No two clients are the same. I might go from seeing a top lawyer to a race horse trainer. Both have very different requirements. It’s my job to help them select the best cut and cloth to deal with their lifestyle.
I like to encourage a client into something a little more daring!
"A well cut suit can knock pounds off someone. Suddenly men stand differently when they know they look their best. Confidence is key. Cloth, cloth, cloth every time. Go for quality. And linings. Push the boat out to make it look like you have given this some thought."
Tailoring is a kind of art form. I like to get the customer behind the drawing board. Together we can pen a garment which enhances their personality, uniquely individual, down to the last thread.
Three piece, double breasted with high waisted, cut off tapered trousers.
"There can be few experiences more satisfying than the pleasure of putting on a suit that has been made for you - you alone. The fit is perfect, the fabric woven for you, and all the choices down to the angle of your button holes are yours."
