Why You Should Always Consider a Second Pair of Trousers with Your Suit
It might not be the most exciting part of ordering a new suit, but an extra pair of trousers could be one of the smartest investments you make.
When you’re commissioning a new suit, there are plenty of decisions to get excited about.
The cloth. The cut. Single or double-breasted. Lapels. Linings. Buttons. Pockets.
Then your tailor asks:
“Would you like an extra pair of trousers?”
It can feel like an optional extra. After all, you’re ordering a suit and a suit already comes with a pair of trousers.
But if you’re investing in a suit that you intend to wear regularly — particularly a business suit — we’d argue that a second pair of trousers is one of the most sensible additions you can make.
And the reason is very simple.
Your Trousers and Jacket Don’t Have the Same Working Day
Think about what happens during an average day in a suit.
You arrive at the office and take your jacket off.
You sit at your desk. You drive to a meeting. You get on a train. You walk to get a coffee. You sit down for lunch. You spend another few hours at your desk.
Your jacket might spend a significant part of that time hanging neatly on the back of your chair.
Your trousers don’t.
They are working all day.
They’re subjected to friction from chairs and car seats, movement as you walk, pressure around the knees and seat when you sit, and generally far more continuous wear than the jacket.
It’s therefore perfectly normal for the trousers of a suit to begin showing their age before the jacket does.
And that’s where a second pair becomes so valuable.
Two Pairs Help Your Whole Suit Last Longer
Rather than wearing the same trousers every time you put on your suit, two pairs allow you to alternate between them.
Wear pair one on Monday and give them a rest.
Next time you reach for the suit, wear pair two.
Suddenly, instead of one pair of trousers taking all the wear associated with that jacket, you’re spreading it between two.
It also means each pair has more opportunity to recover between wears. Wool is a wonderfully resilient natural fibre, and giving a garment time to rest helps it return to shape.
Over the lifetime of a frequently worn suit, that can make a significant difference.
Particularly If It’s a Business Suit
For an occasional suit that comes out of the wardrobe for weddings and events, an extra pair of trousers may not be essential.
For a hardworking business suit, it’s a different story.
If you’re wearing the same navy, charcoal or grey suit once or twice a week, that’s potentially 50, 75 or even 100 wears over the course of a year.
Multiply that over several years and your trousers are doing some serious work.
Having a second pair to rotate effectively spreads that workload.
It’s why we’ll often recommend extra trousers to clients commissioning their core business suits.
We don’t suggest them because we want to sell you something you don’t need.
We suggest them because we’d rather see you still wearing and enjoying the suit years down the line.
The Frustration of a Perfectly Good Jacket
We’ve seen this many times over the years.
A customer has a suit they love. The jacket still looks fantastic and fits beautifully, but the trousers have finally reached the end of their useful life.
“Can you just make me another pair?”
Sometimes we can.
But sometimes we can’t.
Fabric collections change. Mills discontinue designs and colours. Dye lots vary. A cloth you chose several years ago may simply no longer exist.
Even if something looks incredibly similar in the bunch, put a brand-new pair of trousers next to a jacket that’s been worn for several years and there may be a noticeable difference.
Ordering that second pair at the beginning removes the problem.
They’re cut from the same cloth, at the same time, for the same suit.
It’s About Cost Per Wear
We believe this is one of the most important ways to look at good tailoring.
A beautifully tailored suit isn’t intended to be disposable fashion.
You shouldn’t wear it for a season and replace it when the next trend comes along.
Choose the right cloth and style, look after it properly, and a classic suit should form part of your wardrobe for years.
So when you’re considering the price of a suit, don’t only think about the initial cost.
Think about cost per wear.
A £1,500 suit worn five times isn’t particularly good value.
A £1,500 suit worn 150 times is a very different proposition.
And if investing in an additional pair of trousers helps you get significantly more wear from the jacket you’ve already paid for, suddenly that extra pair starts to make a great deal of financial sense.
Buy Better. Wear Longer.
There has been a huge shift towards talking about buying fewer, better clothes.
It’s something we wholeheartedly support.
But buying better isn’t simply about paying more for something.
It’s about choosing pieces carefully, making sure they fit properly, selecting cloths appropriate for how you’re actually going to wear them and looking after those garments so they have the longest possible life.
An extra pair of trousers fits perfectly into that philosophy.
You’re not buying another outfit.
You’re helping the outfit you’ve already invested in work harder.
So, Do You Always Need Two Pairs?
Not necessarily.
That’s where good tailoring should be about understanding the customer rather than simply ticking boxes on an order form.
If you’re commissioning a statement suit for an occasional event, we’d probably tell you to spend the money elsewhere.
But if you’re commissioning the navy suit you expect to reach for every week?
We’d seriously consider two pairs.
For those core wardrobe pieces — navy, charcoal, grey, subtle checks and stripes — an extra pair of trousers is one of those decisions your future self is likely to be very pleased you made.
And This August, We’ll Make the Decision Even Easier
August happens to be the perfect month to put our advice into practice.
Our Free Extra Trouser Offer is back — and it’s one of our most popular promotions of the year.
Throughout August, when you commission a qualifying two-piece suit with Norton & Townsend, we’ll make you a second pair of matching trousers completely free of charge.
We’ve worked with our partner mills to make the offer available across our fabric ranges, so you’re not restricted to a handful of promotional cloths.
With September around the corner, it’s also an ideal opportunity to take stock of your business wardrobe and make sure it’s ready for the return of meetings, conferences, presentations and client visits.
One suit.
Two pairs of trousers.
More wear.
A longer-lasting suit.
Better cost per wear.
That’s investing in tailoring properly.
The Free Extra Trouser Offer runs throughout August 2026 and applies to qualifying two-piece suits. Our £995 suit collection is excluded.
