For those of us seeking a suit that truly fits, off the peg or ready to wear suits bought from high street retailers are never going to do the job. Made to measurements of an average man who doesn’t exist, they’re either too short in the leg if they fit at the waist, or too narrow in the shoulder if they fit round our middle. This then, is where bespoke suit tailoring breaks the mould.
We’re lucky to have a varied mix of customers here at Norton & Townsend. Some men are well versed in the process of bespoke tailoring, having commissioned business suits for years. They know what cut they like, how narrow the leg, the width of the shoulder and they return to us for a specific tailor, their tailor.
Other customers may be making their first foray into the world of bespoke tailoring, commissioning a one-off suit for a special occasion or simply beginning their journey into growing their custom suit wardrobe.
Bespoke tailoring affords the wearer complete autonomy over their sartorial decisions. You are in control of how the suit fits, what fabric is used, the colours and patterns are what you choose. Even the smaller details, like linings, buttons, contrast stitching and custom embroidery – this is all up to you. The former customer will already be well aware of this, whilst the latter is about to find out.
Whilst having complete control of your suit, from the initial chat to the final fitting, is just one of the listless benefits of bespoke tailoring – our team of experienced and dedicated tailors are there to guide your way.
Whether you come to us with a ready-made plan for how you want your suit to look, with a folder of images referencing everyone from James Bond to the Peaky Blinders, or if you’re really not that certain and are open to suggestions – the N&T tailors are always on hand to impart their knowledge and offer their insights to make your suit perfect.
The process of having a suit tailored is one of joy, with no shopping experience quite like it. We’d love for everyone to be able to come into one of our tailoring workshops and get the full experience, but we also understand that not everyone is able or feels comfortable to shop on the high-street currently. Which is why we’ve put three options in place for our customers, so no-one need miss out.
We have two bricks and mortar stores in Leeds and London where you can book a one-to-one appointment with your own tailor. We offer a travelling-tailors service, where you can organise for a tailor to come and visit you in your home or workplace.
Or if you’d rather shop for tailored suits online from the comfort of your own home, we can organise for a video call, where we’ll guide you through how to take the necessary measurements we’ll need to craft a pattern that is unique to you and you alone.
There are a lot of options to take into consideration before embarking on your bespoke commission, and a lot of it can boil down to the intended environment you’ll be wearing your suit. Visit our style guide to read a little more into the classic suits we could base yours on, and head to our journal to read further into style choices you could include in your suit. If you’ve heard enough though, contact one of the team to book your appointment.
