I have been called on for years by Jamie Roxburgh, my bespoke Norton and Townsend tailor. I have an odd shaped body and off the rack closes rarely fit me well. Equally, Savile Row tailors are pricey and tediously require multiple fittings. Jamie pops around once a quarter anticipating the change in seasons and remembering when my current suits are probably becoming worn. He has my measurements on file so all is needed is a quick choice of fabric. Six weeks later I have a perfectly fitting suit that never ever requires a second fitting. And the price is great to boot!

Being a bloke and having a bloke’s attitudes towards clothes shopping, I have to admit that my Norton & Townsend contact Jamie Roxburgh makes the whole business about as close to being enjoyable as I could possibly imagine. Off-the-peg suits aren’t an option for me – the longest available trousers finish at mid-calf – but even if they were, I wouldn’t dream of it. The N&T experience is miles better and more civilised, there’s infinitely much more choice, the quality is impeccable and, perhaps most remarkably, it’s not significantly more expensive. All that, and I get to argue with Jamie about football too.
